How to Successfully Work with a Content Professional
June 2, 2023X Marks The Branding Hubris
July 25, 2023If you’re a small business owner (or an executive or manager), you’ve seen posts like this before, and it’s usually some pitch for a business coach.
And, well…this will be like that. But not quite.
I Know Some Thangs…
I’ve been working in content for about 11 years now and it’s been a roller coaster ride. I’ve learned a lot about about content but also about working with all kinds of people. A lot of important life lessons about work and the importance of healthy, respectful relationships that make the work even better.
And even if I know a lot about business at this point, there is absolutely no way I’d go along my small biz life without having some sort of help.
There are too many things to navigate: sales, profitability, customer service, marketing, service delivery, taxes, contracts, keeping your business edge…and on and on it goes.
…But I Could Always Use Some Help
I have worked with a couple of business coaches before, and I realized that coaching is definitely different than therapy. And one key difference is the approach.
From my experience, and I admit that this is a bit reductive: coaching is a lot more in your face than therapy. You can come with your issue and the coach is basically like, how do you plan on overcoming that obstacle? It’s more motivational. Get out there and make those sales or give that presentation or overcome that work challenge. And sometimes, you just need that prompting, that strong accountability.
Meanwhile, in therapy, you are there because of some life difficulty: a death, a job loss, a breakup, relationship problems, a bad habit, mental health issues. Sometimes, you’re there for self-actualization. Depending on the type of therapy, the approach can be a bit less in your face. But from my perspective, the goal is to heal and grow with support.
The Small Biz Life Is Scary!
Starting a small business, whether out of love of your industry or idea, or because you need to forge your own path, is daunting. And there are days when you want to throw in the towel and leave your industry and go back to the 9 to 5. And there is nothing wrong with that, if that’s what you have to do, whether that’s temporarily or permanently.
Late stage capitalism is a scary beast we’re all trying to survive. Dealing with PITA (pain in the ass) clients, no clients, fabulous clients — it can be a lot. It can be scary, the constant uncertainty.
But what if you had the best of both worlds? Someone who can coach you but also give you support from a therapeutic perspective?
A few years ago, I was in a mastermind and it started off well and it started off well and ended pretty poorly. Interestingly, I was in one prior that cost $$$$, and the same thing happened. And I’m sure racism was at the root of both of those issues.
But one silver lining in those dark clouds was meeting other like-minded business owners, including another coach I worked with on my marketing and then a coach I worked with on and off since then.
And here’s comes the best of both worlds part!
Small Business Energetics
The coach I worked with became a friend and we helped our businesses grow. I helped them with content planning and they helped me with looking at the energetics of my business.
Here’s where it gets a little woo-woo — ready?
What the heck are the energetics of a business? I believe it incorporates a few things, so here are some sample questions that could come up in a session with my friend.
- Where could my business be blocked in receiving new, better aligned clients?
- Where are those new, better aligned clients? What are the issues that I’ll be helping them solve?
- Is there something in my energy that is some sticky slime from previous clients?
- What are the vibes for the next month or quarter?
- Why do I feel invisible with my content?
Depending on your business, your questions or concerns could be different. Either way, my friend looks into the energy and can predict when things will happen and give guidance and support when times are rough.
With the pandemic, business has been even rockier than usual and I was just thinking about how I knew the bumps and curves I’ve experienced this years are par for the course. I know that in my head.
But it’s still good to have someone on your side saying, with certainty and faith, that things will get better, even when circumstances say otherwise.
My Small Business Shero
So this wonderful friend’s name is Shelby Melissa, and she is the best of both worlds, because she has:
- A Masters in Social Work degree
- A coaching background
- An esoteric energetic edge as a Reiki Master
With her support, kindness, tenacity, and compassion, I’ve been able to bring in better clients, have my most profitable year, and most importantly, feel so much better about my business knowing that she’s by my side.
And she’s inclusive af. It’s not just some catchphrase to her.
An Invitation to a Free Meditation
She just re-worked her awesome 1:1 service which you should completely check out. I can personally highly recommend it because she since too is a small business owner, it’s both comforting and transformative to have someone who gets the roller coaster ride of business ownership and can offer you a barf bag when things get too hairy and scary.
If you want to check out firsthand what it’s like to work with my friend on your business, Shelby is also offering a free energy meditation to bring more abundance into your business on Friday, June 23, 2023 at 9am PDT/12pm EDT via Zoom.
This is great if you feel like you have the biz mindset and strategy down but still feel like something is missing.
This meditation will work on your business’s energy, not necessarily yours.
I hope you have someone (or multiple someones) like Shelby. If you want to work with her, I strongly suggest you attend the free meditation first, and then check out her Energy Work for Business offering. Then she’ll see if there’s a good mutual fit because there are limited spots — and that is not sales BS! I promise! It’s 1:1 work, so there are not infinite spots open. And, I have one of them!
Speaking of not having infinite spots open, I have two spots open for content clients. If you need support with content planning, strategy, or management, I’m looking for people who are mission-driven and know the value of content and want to work with someone side-by-side as partners. If this is you, contact me here and let’s get the content party started!
